With the onset of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu, rain has intensified in many places across the state. Especially, the districts of North Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram have been affected by incessant rain for the past few days. In the backdrop of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for many districts.
Red Alert in Tiruvallur: Yellow Alert for Chennai
Thiruvallur district has recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours. With 8 cm of rain recorded in Tiruttani alone, heavy rain is continuing throughout the district. Due to this, the Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for Tiruvallur.
Following this, a Yellow Alert has also been issued for Chennai district. This means that there is a high chance of moderate rainfall, the Meteorological Department has warned.
Chennai has been experiencing cloudy weather for the past few days, with moderate to heavy rains at some places. This has led to waterlogging in the lower elevations of the city — Perambur, Villivakkam, Saidapet, and Pozhichalur.
Holiday announced for schools only in Dharmapuri
The District Collector has announced a holiday for schools only in Dharmapuri district today due to the impact of rain. Officials said that this decision was taken considering the safety of students as the roads are muddy and waterlogged due to continuous rains.
The Education Department has announced that holidays will be declared in other districts — Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram — as required based on the weather forecast. Currently, there is no holiday announcement for colleges in Chennai and nearby areas, but it is said that the officials will take a decision depending on the situation.

Avoid areas where there is a risk of falling power lines and tree branches.
