Due to heavy cold weather, flower production has been affected, leading to a sharp increase in flower prices.
The Thovalai Flower Market in Kanyakumari district is the largest flower market in Tamil Nadu. Flowers are brought here from many parts of Tamil Nadu, as well as from different areas within Kanyakumari district. From this market, flowers are also sold to several places in Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram.
Compared to other flower markets, prices at the Thovalai market are usually lower. However, flower prices often change depending on supply and demand.
Currently, due to a shortage of flower arrivals and the demand caused by Christmas and New Year celebrations, the price of jasmine has risen to ₹5,000 per kilogram. The ongoing cold weather in Tamil Nadu and the upcoming Christmas festival have reduced the supply of flowers like pitchi (frangipani).
As a result, prices have increased significantly. Pitchi flowers are now sold at ₹2,500 per kilogram. Vaadamalli is priced at ₹60 per kilogram, chrysanthemum at ₹120 per kilogram, and sampangi at ₹240 per kilogram. Lotus flowers are sold at ₹10 per flower.
The sudden rise in flower prices has caused concern among customers.
